I just noticed that the filesizes I’m seeing reported in the RSS feed (at least, how Firefox renders it out) for the different mp4 downloads aren’t the same as the actual download sizes while I pull videos down from the site.

In some cases, they’re reporting almost 2x the actual size of the file. I wonder if this is something I’m just not understanding or an issue with something else. It doesn’t affect the usability in any case, just an oddity.

I saw we’re providing more than one version for download in the RSS feed for the site. This is cool, but AFAIK I’ve never seen a feedcatcher that can efficiently handle more than one enclosure per item (it usually just grabs the first one available).

So, random thoughts based on this/making things easier all around:

    • Since we’re already making multiple scaled versions available anyway, is it possible for the Flash player to have a “download” link embedded somewhere within it so people can get some take-out?
    • We might do this and it’s not apparent, but is it possible to offer multiple feeds of different qualities in order to give people options? Some people might not want to download a gig and a quarter when a new WordCamp talk comes out. The HD feed would have to include the highest-possible conversion (sometimes HD isn’t available), and then a DVD-quality feed and a smaller feed (iPhone-sized?)

I’ll add to this list if I brainstorm anything additional today.

Thanks for the thoughts on this – they’re both areas on the agenda (as is getting a decent iTunes presence set up). Hailin’s probably more aware of the logistics and timeframes of the player integration – I think there are a few other things in the works first. +1 for the multi-feed. We spoke at one point about having an iPod/iPhone friendly type thing, too – which would be nice.

Blogged about the WordPress.tv feeds, Miro, iTunes et al.

Yo Michael — looked into the iTunes feed a bit more; it looks like while Hailin has specified the HD version first in the media RSS stuff, iTunes takes a somewhat “simpler” view of the feed, only looking at what’s in the <enclosure> tag — which, in our case, is still the lower resolution video file. In order to get the resolution we’re looking for in iTunes we’ll need to specify the HD version as the enclosure.

Awesome – thanks for the heads-up! Will ping Hailin about it. Can’t wait to see the iTunes HD feed in action

What about using iTunes-specific feed extensions?

          Sounds even better!

We’ll need to add these if we want to get listed in iTunes’ podcast guide.

looks like it is the trick. Although we put the hd first in media:content , the non-FF browsers honor enclosure first. Just modified enclousre so that it spits out the highest resolution video first.

will look into these options soon, and talk to Miro about their algorithm to pick the feed

This is all great news – maybe we can put out a “portable WordPress.tv” vid once things are all peachy

Our Miro channel was approved – people can subscribe, preview and download content right from here: https://www.miroguide.com/feeds/9703

Only thing is that videos download without the mp4 file-ending, so you have to manually fix that to watch them in your video player app for the time being

Is that a bug on their end or ours?

    • Michael Pick 10:06 am on April 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Same thing happens in a regular feed reader, so I guess it’s how our system handles the mp4s. I’ll ask Hailin

      Still broken?

      • Michael Pick 12:57 am on May 7, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Hailin tweaked the URLs, so it should be putting out mp4s now. In HD.

Confirmed – just downloaded one from above link – HD MP4s are go!

We’re looking in to iTunes support. Unfortunately, unlike Miro, iTunes is rather proprietary and opts out on open standards so far as we can see

The wptv feed has a couple of validation issues that could be ironed out, but pretty much there, and certainly functional

Looking into setting up and organizing Miro and iTunes channels for WordPress.tv today, followed by some more animation work

Meta added to all of our videos, which means you can now download them right to your feed reader or podcatcher. Hopefully there’ll be easy-subscription features in the forthcoming WordPress.tv makeover our design folks have planned.

Finished WordPress for iPhone (there comes a point where you have to let go). Meta getting there for the back catalog of WordPress.tv content. Early adopters can subscribe to WordPress.tv already in Miro or their feed reader via http://wordpress.tv/feed (beware, meta in progress)

Coming soon to a WordPress.tv near you – MRSS… Per category feeds, and some iTunes/Miro action. Can’t wait – a lot of people have been asking for this and I’m looking forward to having a presence off-site
